A-Walking: Swainby Slosher

Our three expeditions this week (Sunday, 14th November) each took place in the western area of the North York Moors. Both the A-Walk and the C-Walk set off from the A19 road near Ox Bank while the B-Walk followed a circular route from Swainby. All three walks finished at Swainby.

After leaving the lay-by {SE 432 928}, the intent of the A-Walk was to visit Nether Silton, the Cleveland Way, Harker Yates Ridge, Sun Bank, Dale Head, Swainby Shooting House and Limekiln Bank before arriving at our final destination in Swainby {NZ 476 022}.

We left our drop-off point at about 9.50 am. There were ten people in the group: PB, RB, KB, KF, JH, CL, KL, LM, GT and JT. PB led the walk.

Lay-by on A19
From the lay-by on the A19 road at {SE 432 928}, we headed in a southerly direction for about 265 yards and then turned left along a farm access track in an easterly direction. This took us to the farm at Ox Bank {SE 438 926}. From here we continued across the fields to reach the minor road at {SE 448 924} (Berghill Lane) where we turned right. We walked in a south-easterly direction along the road in order to reach the road junction at {SE 449 923} and then turned left onto West Lane. Following the lane in an easterly direction we made our way to the village of Nether Silton {SE 456 923}.

After passing through the village, we continued in a south-easterly direction along Bridge Beck Lane to reach a road junction at {SE 469 917}. Turning left, we climbed up pass The Nab (on our left) to reach Nab Farm {SE 476 921}. Continuing along the public footpath in an easterly direction, we now had a good climb up onto the high ground at {SE 490 919} where we joined the Cleveland Way (CW).

Near the Cleveland Way
We headed north along the CW for about 390 yards and then turned right along a good track at {SE 491 922}. Heading east, we followed the track along Harker Yates Ridge to reach {SE 512 915}. We had some good views of Thorodale (on our right) as we walked east. Turning onto a north-westerly bearing, we made our way around the eastern edge of Arden Great Moor to reach Sun Bank {SE 511 928}. Now heading in a westerly direction along the northern edge of the moor, we made our way to {SE 501 934} where we started our descent down Locker Bank. We made our way in a north-easterly direction to a wall junction at {SE 505 942} where we stopped for a short lunch-stop.

From our lunch-stop location we made our way in a west-north-westerly direction towards the (again ruined) farm at Dale Head {SE 495 948}. Continuing on our west-north-westerly bearing, we reached the minor road at {SE 488 955}. We turned right along the road and in 170 yards we turned left onto a northerly bearing. Following a well-defined track, we trekked across Whitestones Ridge {SE 488 964}. From here we followed a north-north-easterly bearing as we made our way to Swainby Shooting House {SE 495 981} where we stopped for a short tea-break.

Swainby Shooting House
We left the shooting house on a northerly bearing and trekked north to {SE 494 988} and then turned left onto a north-westerly bearing along Stony Ridge. At the track junction near {SE 489 994} we started our descent down through the woods near Limekiln Bank to reach Coalmire Lane {NZ 480 011}. Turning right along the road, we made our way into the small village of Swainby to await the arrival of our coach.

Despite the amount of rain that had fallen during the night, today's expedition on the North York Moors was quite an interesting and exciting one. However, in many places, particularly the climb from Nab Farm up onto the Cleveland Way, there was a lot of mud and water which caused us to 'slosh about' as we made our way along our route.

Use the buttons below to see where we went, how we did and some of the photos.

Our three expeditions this week (Sunday, 7th November) each took place in the
western region of the North York Moors. All the walks set off from Clay Bank and finished in Great Ayton.

After leaving Clay Bank {NZ 572 034}, the intent of the A-Walk was to visit Medd Crag, Beak Hills, Kirby, Great Broughton, Ingleby Greenhow and Easby before arriving at our final destination in Great Ayton {NZ 562 106}.

We left our drop-off point at about 9.50 am. There were seven people in the group: JB, KB, PB, KF, CL, GT and JT. Standing in for JJ, who was indisposed, PB led the walk.

We set off ina southerly direction along the B1257 road towards Chop Gate. At {NZ 572 032} we turned left along the Cleveland Way (CW) and followed this up-hill (see the picture below) to reach the path junction at {NZ 579 030} on Carr Ridge.

Near Clay Bank
We left the CW at {NZ 581 026} and headed south along the high ground towards Urra Moor. Continuing on a southerly bearing along the western edge of the moor, we made our way to Medd Crag {NZ 573 009}. We now descended in a south-westerly direction to Bilsdale Hall {NZ 566 004} and the B1257 road at {NZ 561 006}.

Leaving the road, we followed a good track up-hill to Bank House {NZ 558 008} and then made a north-north-westerly ascent up onto Cold Moor {NZ 551 020}. We had some good views of the surrounding area as we made our way north to the track junction at {NZ 551 023}. We now turned left onto a westerly bearing and dropped down to the farm at Beak Hills {NZ 547 024}. After passing through the farm, we turned right onto a north-north-westerly bearing and had a gentle climb up to meet the CW at {NZ 544 034}. Turning left, we followed a good path in a westerly direction over the spoil tips beneath Kirby Bank to reach the path junction at {NZ 530 034} on Busby Moor. From here we made a steep descent to Cote Hill {NZ 529 040} where we turned onto an easterly bearing.

We stopped for a short lunch break at {NZ 531 040} and then continued our easterly trek to reach the farm at Toft Hill {NZ 539 042}. After negotiating the farm, we turned left onto a northerly bearing and walked along the road towards the village of Kirby {NZ 53912 05905}. Just before entering the village, we turned right along a footpath that took us in a north-easterly direction across the fields to the minor road (Kirby Lane) at {NZ 545 063} near Great Broughton. We followed this in an easterly direction to the cross-roads at {NZ 547 063}.

Great Broughton
At the road intersection, we turned right and walked through the village to reach a public footpath on our left at {NZ 549 059}. We followed this in an easterly direction across the fields to Meynell Hall {NZ 564 061} and onwards to the minor road (Marsh Lane) at {NZ 572 064}. Turning right along the lane, we followed this into the village of Ingleby Greenhow. We now navigated a route through the village to reach the school at {NZ 580 064} where we stopped for a short tea break.

From our tea-stop location, we took a north-easterly bearing across the fields towards Battersby Junction {NZ 587 072}. We now followed a public footpath in a north-westerly direction to Fir Tree Farm {NZ 580 080} and onwards to Pilly Hall {NZ 577 085}.

We passed through Easby and then turned left at {NZ 577 088} onto a public footpath that took us in a north-north-easterly direction towards Woodhouse Farm {NZ 572 095}. We crossed Cross Lane at {NZ 568 101} and continued in a north-westerly direction to reach the village of Great Ayton where our coach was waiting to take us home.

Great Ayton
Despite the wet and muddy conditions underfoot, as a result of heavy rainfall during the night, we had a very interesting and exciting adventure today.

A-Walking: Whitby Wonders

Our three expeditions this week (Sunday, 31st October) each took place in the south-eastern area of the North York Moors. The A-Walk set off from Sneaton Corner, the B-Walk started at Hawsker and the C-Walk commenced at Whitby. All three walks finished at Whitby.

After leaving Sneaton Corner {NZ 916 036}, the intent of the A-Walk was to visit Shooting House Rigg, Pond Farm, Marsh Lane, Robin Hood's Bay, Ness Point, Saltwick and Whitby Abbey before arriving at our final destination in Whitby {NZ 893 111}.

We left our drop-off point at about 10.30 am. There were eight people in the group: JB, PB, KF, JH, MH, CL, LM and JT. MH led the walk.

Sneaton Corner
We set off from the road junction at Sneaton Corner (see the above picture) on a south-westerly bearing along Robin Hood's Bay Road (a moorland track) to reach Shooting House Rigg. At {NZ 899 017} we turned onto an easterly bearing and made our way along Biller Howe Dale Slack in order to reach Ling Hill Plantation {NZ 912 018}. From here we followed a path through Biller Howe Dale to reach the access track to Billira Cottage {NZ 919 009}. Turning left, we went in a north-easterly direction to Pond Farm and then crossed the A171 road at {NZ 923 013}.

Maintaining our north-easterly bearing, we trekked along a minor road to reach a footpath at {NZ 928 017}. Turning left onto this path, we followed it in a north-north-westerly direction to reach St Ives Farm {NZ 923 027} near Park Hill. Leaving the farm area in an easterly direction, we followed a good track to a small wood near {NZ 928 027} where we stopped for a short lunch break.

From our lunch-stop location, we continued on our easterly bearing and made our way towards Swallow Head Farm {NZ 937 027} and, a little further east, Fyling Old Hall Farm {NZ 943 028}. Just after the second farm, we joined the dismantled railway track at {NZ 944 028} and followed this in a northerly direction to reach Middlewood Lane {NZ 946 042}. At this point we turned right, leaving the old railway line in order to join Marsh Lane. This took us in an east-north-easterly direction to join the coastal route of the Cleveland Way (CW) at {NZ 952 045}. Turning onto a northerly bearing, we made our way to the small fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay {NZ 951 051}

Robin Hood's Bay
From the sea front, we had a good climb up to the old disused railway track at {NZ 950 054}. Turning right, we continued along the CW. As we went north, we had some spectacular views of the coastal scenary - including one of a wrecked ship. We stopped for a short tea break near {NZ 954 070} - sitting on the cliffs overlooking the sea.

Wrecked shop
Continuing along the CW, we passed by the lighthouse and Whitby Fog Signal at {NZ 926 102}. As we made our way in a north-north-westerly direction, we had some good view of the interesting rocks around Saltwick Bay.

We passed through the caravan park near Stoupe Cross Farm to arrive at Whitby Abbey and St Mary's Church on the headland near {NZ 901 112}. From here, we descended down into Whitby using the stone steps leading from the church.

As it happened, being Halloween, there was a large gathering of Goths in the town. So, as we walked through Whitby, we were confronted with hundreds of people that were dressed in some extremely spectacular Goth costumes. Seeing these was a really wonderful experience and provided an interesting way to to bring our walk to an end.

From the river area, we climbed up to the car park on the West Cliff where our coach was waiting to to take us back to Teesside.

Many thanks to MH for organising such an interesting trek for us today. Use the buttons below to see where we went, how we did and some of the photos.
