A-Walking in Wensleydale

On Sunday, 6th May, Stockton Rambling Club had three walks in the Wensleydale area of North Yorkshire. All walks finished in Askrigg. The A-walk was enthusiastically led by Jane Thompson (see picture below).
 

From our drop-off point on the A684 road near Lords Bridge, our route took us in a southerly direction along Bay Bolton Avenue to reach the first climb of the day at Capple Bank. This took us up onto a minor road near The Gallops. We followed this road in a westerly direction towards Penhill Farm where we turned left. After 500 yards, at {SE 067 869}, we left the road on a westerly bearing.
 
Following our ascent and descent of Penhill, we made our way to the village of West Burton. From here we took a north-westerly bearing across Bishopdale to arrive in Wensleydale where we crossed the River Ure at Yore Bridge.
 
After a short 'icecream stop' at Yore Bridge, we continued on a westerly bearing (292°), now following the course of the River Ure until we reached Worton Bridge where we turned south and crossed the river again. From the small village of Worton we headed west - passing Worton Scar and Brough Scar - in order to reach Bainbridge.
 
Leaving Bainbridge in a northerly direction, we crossed the River Ure for a third time. Now making our way in an easterly direction our route took us to Abbey Head and, finally, the village of Askrigg - where our expedition ended.
 
During our six-hour trek, we covered a distance of 16 miles with an ascent of 2600 feet. Many thanks to Jane for such a splendid day.
