A-Walking: Rothbury Circular via Simonside

Each of our three walks on Sunday, 22nd September, took place in the Coquetdale area of Northumberland. All of the walks started from and finished in the lovely town of Rothbury.

The A-Walk was led by Peter Cull (pictured below). There were ten walkers in the group. The route took in Thropton, Great Tosson, Simonside and Lordenshaw. It covered a distance of 14.1 miles and involved a total ascent of 2200 feet.
Peter Cull - A-Walk leader
From our drop-off location in the centre of Rothbury we headed west along the north bank of the River Coquet. At {NU 051 015} we left the river and climbed up towards Brae Head {NU 044 025} and then used Physic Lane to drop down into Thropton - where we crossed the River Coquet. Continuing on a southerly bearing, we made our way to Great Tosson and then had a good climb up over Windy Crag in order to reach our lunch-stop location at {NU 023 000} near Chester Hope. We had some good views from here.

After our lunch-stop, we continued in a southerly direction - making our way through the forest to reach the foot of the Simonside Hills. We now had another good climb up onto the top of Simonside. Because the weather and visibility were so good, we had some tremendous views from the high ground. Moving off in an easterly direction, we next visited Old Stell Crag and Dove Crag before stopping for an early tea-stop at the cairn on The Beacon {NZ 045 986}.

Following our descent to the road at Lordenshaw car par, we made our way to Lordenshaw and continued our easterly trek to arrive at Lee Siding. From here we followed a minor road to Brockley Hall, East Raw, Butterknowes and West Raw. At this point we turned onto a north-westerly bearing and followed a footpath, on the south side of the River Coquet, that took us back to Rothbury - where our expedition ended.

Many thanks to Peter for leading the walk.

A-Walking: Scalby to the Flask Inn via Broxa Forest

Our three walks on Sunday, 8th September all took place in the Scarborough area of the North York Moors. The A-Walk set off from Scalby, the B-Walk started in Burniston while the C-Walk set off a little further north from Cloughton. All of the walks finished at the Flask Inn.

The A-Walk was led by Phil Barker - pictured below. There were five walkers in the group; the distance covered was 16.8 miles. The weather was spectacular!
Phil Barker - A-Walk leader

From our drop-off location near the cross-roads in Scalby, we headed in a westerly direction through the Hay Brow area of the village in order to reach the first of our four climbs. This took us up onto the high ground near Northfield Farm. From here we made our way across pleasant farmland to Silpho. Continuing in a south-westerly direction, we dropped down through Haggland Wood in order to reach a track near Low Dales Farm. Turning right, onto this track, we headed north to reach Whisper Dales where we stopped for a short lunch break.

After lunch we entered into our second climb - up into Broxa Forest. We then headed north through the forest in order to make our way to Ward Hill. As we descended towards Lownorth Bridge, we had some wonderful views of Harwood Dale and the terrain to the north of us which we yet had to cover. Our third climb was a long, drawn-out, gradual ascent that took us from Lownorth Bridge and finished at Burn Howe Rigg on High Moor. About half-way through the climb, we stopped for a short tea-break near Brown Hill.

From our tea-stop location we continued on a north-westerly bearing over High Moor until we reached a track at {SE 901 991}. We turned right onto this and followed it in an easterly direction to the cairn on Burn Howe - and onwards to reach Jugger Howe Beck. After crossing the beck we started our final ascent. This involved a very steep climb initially and then a more gradual one as we approached the A171 road. Turning left along the road, we made our way to our final destination at the Flask Inn.

Many thanks to Phil for leading a splendid walk.
